Red Terror Coloration

I would like to know as well. I think barred means unsure or nervous not sure. My male is almost never barred and then I added a new fish that hes been lip locking with and three days later he is still mostly barred. On the other hand, I have also heard that barred means more relaxed. Definitely want to know everyone else thinks.

For most cichlids that I know, barred means stressed. For your festae (red terror) barred = stressed

Not necessarily stress. I have seen mine show the barring at many different times. While feeding, Spawning, While just showing off for each other during pairing.
It is a sign of their mood though, So I guess you could label it as "stress", But I like to think of it more as a way for them to express their excitement or feelings.

Watch this. This is one of my pairs. At the beginning, do they look stressed? Then around 37 seconds in they notice something in the sand. Watch the bars show up on the male. Then about 60 seconds in they fade. Its pretty cool I think and just a way for an animal that cannot speak to express itself.
