Female, the dark area in the anterior of the dorsal fin is a dead give away.

That's what I researched but some forums said at 5" some males have the black in the dorsal fin too.

Sometimes when a pair of new world cichlids is in the process of brood care, normal sexual distinctions can become blurred.
Take this pair of Herichthys carpintus
Normally a male has no color in the dorsal, like the male pic below left

But when engaging in brood care an interesting phenomenon occurs

a normal male festae, will look like this

I have a male and it never looked that much like a female, I'm going all in, 100% female. Cool fish.
