Hey guys and gals i have an 9" RT but he has open wounds on both sides just behind his gills like towards his body a bit almost looks like HITH but on his sides???? i got him for free from a felleo MFK'er and he said its getting better than it was but i dont want to put him in with my tank he is in a 40gal Rubbermaid with a heater and large airstone! i cant find out what is this cause and also can i use Melafix in tat container without a filter??? i have been doing 50% daily WC but the melafix bottle says to only chnage 25%WC on the 7th day. but i cant go that long with out a WC with no filter so what if i did 25% WC daily and just add 25% of a daily dose of melafix to replace that dosage that got changed out?????? he is very healthy minus this Thanks ----Mark

I dont think a rubbermaid tub with no filter is going to help the whole healing process any. Id suggest seeding a 10-20gal tank and get a small $10 internal filter. Then post some pics so we can give you an accurate diagnosis and treatment. Chances are its HITH
*salt will help for the time being.

yes i got it for free! ya i am workin on a 90gal right now just waiting for the seller to get off work and if that one falls thru i have a 55gal i can fall back on, both of those tanks are running and established so once i get it back home and running the Red Terror can go in my 30gal which is growing out a few fish which those fish need an upgraded tank so after i upgrade ill have the 30gal permanently for a hospital tank, so hopefully today i can nab up a new tank!!!

Dont risk putting the sick RT with your healthy fish. You need a quarintine tank, not an unfiltered tub.
Btw, I thought you had other large tanks?

You can use a rubbermaid-tub with heater+filter. I use rubbermaid tubs all the time for quarantine tanks for my koi (yes, the kind you buy for storage, 30+ gallons).

Make sure you get a filter on that bad boy and properly seed it from one of your existing filters (liek the previous poster mentioned). I've also used AMMONIA-CHIPS to help with the ammonia problems (don't know if it takes out medication). If using ammo-chips DO NOT add salt (salt causes ammo-chips to release ALL ammonia).

As for MelaFix, you can do water change everyday and just add more Melafix. However, I've noticed MelaFix can stress out fish by making their breathing harder (its kinda oily). It's more cost effective to buy the Pond Melafix, as it's more concentrated and cheaper in the long run.

If the wounds are bad you need stronger meds. Melafix is more for scratches. Use a strong oxidizer like Potassium Permanganate or an anti-biotic.

I've heard HITH is from vitamin deficiency. I had a blue Dolphin (african cichlid) with HITH. I bought a API vitamin-pyramid ($3.50) and added that to tank. Week later HITH was getting better.

Good luck!

had!!! i had a pond set-up for a pair of Motoro Pups that did'nt make the shipping! then purchased a heathly sized pair of rays that were able to go into my 8 foot tank right off the get go no need for the pond anymore so i took it down but after tonight my 30gal grow out will be turn into my quarantine tank!!! Plus i wont introduce a sick fish with my main tank to much in there to risk this red terror came from a friend thats having tank trouble and has the tank this RT came from over populated and possibly under filtered so i'm thinking it was just bad water conditions that created this problem cuz everything else in that tank he had was good!!

got the 55Gal with black stand with like 10 fish for $200 whop whoo!! So if its possible HITH thats just from Water conditions correct its not contagious is it??? if its not why cant i just put him in my 8footer main tank which i keep my parameters perfect wont he get better on his own from that???

You can do whatever you want.....

However, your assuming your fish ONLY has HITH. If it gives your fish something else, you only have yourself to blame.
