What is the current accepted scientific name for red terror?

this seems like something i should just Google i KNOW!

but im getting mixed results.

exCichlasoma
Cichlasoma
Nandopis
Amphilophus
Heros
Herichthys

I am also interested to know why there is such a mix up with this fishes name?

I'm pretty sure it's ex-Cichlasoma atm.

Most all cichlids have gone thru the same thing. As more research is done, they keep getting reclassified under a new genus.

Cichlasoma is a genus of fish in the cichlid family. The genus was previously very large, including cichlids from Texas, North America, through all of Central America to parts of South America.
Reclassification and subsequent splitting of the genus by Sven O. Kullander and other ichthyologists has resulted in many of the former species from the genus Cichlasoma[1][2] now being placed within separate genera such as Amphilophus, Archocentrus, Herichthys, Heros, Nandopsis, Parachromis, Thorichthys, Vieja and a number of others.
The genus Cichlasoma now consists of a few fish found in South America.

Species previously designated as Cichlasoma now frequently annotated as "ex-Cichlasoma" awaiting relocation to other genera
ex-Cichlasoma festae
ex-Cichlasoma salvini
ex-Cichlasoma trimaculatum
ex-Cichlasoma urophthalmus

I understand a bit better now. Its a bummer that the prefix ex-Cichlasoma isnt a genus but a waiting list im assuming. am i correct? what is red terror most closely related to? mayan cichlid? before reading this i thought trimac was Amphilophus? IMO Trimac and RT's body shape closely resembles "red devil complex" but then again so does nandopis and many others. i think its best if i just ignore the prefixes or maybe i am still not getting it.

There's a lot more than just body shape that goes in to it. I wouldn't worry too much about it, leave it up to the PhDs to hash it out (even they frequently disagree once something has been classified, hence the constant changing)--as to your question, you're most likely going to see it as "ex-cichlasoma."

ex-cichlasoma is gonna be common name if you asked me..

exHeros is more slightly accurate than exCichlasoma since they aren't acaras.

I'ts currently ex-cichlasoma - nothing else.
