OK i know the fish store sell mayan cichlid as a red terror my question that i have is how can you tell the difference between them when they are like 2 in and have no color. The one that my LFS is selling is all grey with a black dot on the tail fin

thats the thing with baby cichlids, they all look the same when theyre small. good luck

mayan is a false red terror. festaes are the true red terrors, the difference is the festaes the eye spot on the tail isnt centered like the false one is. also the lines that are closer to the head of the fish should be a y shape.

When talking about red terrors I would stick to the "mayan" or "festae". Get the term red terror our of your vocabulary. all it does is cause confusion. Mayans have all the rights to the term red terror so saying true and false red terroris also misleading. Festae usually have a y or 4 shaped line right after the gills but its not always visible. But sometimes on small occasions they don't meet. Also on the festae the spot on the tail is smaller and towards the upper part of the tail. On the mayan however their lines will never meet and the circle on the tail is bigger and center on the tail. No matter what size festae and mayans are, you will ALWAYS be able to tell the difference between the two.
