Hi guys and gals, today i got my 8 baby red terrors, i am so excited, but i was wondering if anyone can tell me, how big do they have to grow, before you can tell if they are male or female? they are about 1-1.5 inches at the moment. I am only new to this, but became obsessed with these fish from the moment i first saw them! if anyone has some advice to share, it would be greatly appreciated! cheers, Kel

Sexing festae is really dificult they can be tricky to sex... at about 5" you will be able to know for sure what you have...

Cool, it's nice know there's another person growing out small festae. You can start venting at around 4 inches. However, it'd be a nightmare for you to catch all 8 and vent. You could always wait it out. Did you happen to get your batch from Florida fish direct? Or a fellow MFKer in the marketplace?

I am actually from Australia, and they are really hard to find here, i searched for months, and after researching them for months, decided it would be best to buy a group of them rather than just getting one or two and hoping for the best, so any info you guys can share with me will be greatly appreciated:)

are you sure you got festae and not mayans? Got pics, i know you said theyre small but... Im just checking

1. You should post pics to make sure they're festae.

2. You won't be able to tell until they're around 5 inches... which takes a lot of time... prob. like a year from now. I've tried venting mine which are between 1.5 and 3 inches and had no luck either... apparently they're too young still or I have a really bad sight.

Sexing is difficult for festae. I am finally able to determine the sex of my festae which are about 4-5 inches.

Agree with Jason...post the pics. Alot of distributors sell Mayans (Urothalmus) as Red Terrors (Festae). 12" and up. Females are bright red with dark vertical bands and a dark dorsal, males usually are not as red and may have blue spangles on the fins..
