I'm assuming you are speaking of the festae and not the mayan cichlid, both go by the generic name of Red Terror.
I've owned a handful of festae and I've noticed some different personalities out of them. I've had some that were very skittish, always looking to hide from me as soon as I would approach the tank, and even more so when the tank light would go on. Then on the other hand I've had some that made for great wet pets, they would greet me as soon as I would walk in the room. I currently have a 7 inch male and female festae that get really annoyed when I put my finger up to the glass. They have been this way since they hit about 4 inches. This has been my favorite pair so far because they have that "rip your nose off" personality that suits their name very well. They have more aggressive behavior than any of my previous festae, and I'm judging their aggression based on when they are not spawning. Any festae pair that spawns will be extremely aggressive, as will most if not all cichlids, and this is where I believe the "Red Terror" name comes from.
I would have to say that the tempermant of the festae varies from fish to fish, even siblings from the same spawn. I have another female from the same spawn as the aggressive 7 inch female and she's always been very skittish compared to her sibling, even when I used to have them both equally divided in a 125 gallon tank. If I would have had them free swimming together, I would have thought the aggressive fish (which was a tad bit smaller by the way) was just the more dominant fish in the tank, but since they were divided I know this not to be the case.
