Last July I got a juvie red Texas to replace my midas that died. Gf wanted another fish with the Texas 75g so I got a juvie Rd flowerhorn a few days later. The flowerhorn would chase the Texas all over the tank even though the Texas was bigger than the flowerhorn. After about a week I moved the Texas to its own tank 36g or so and put in some cichlid stones for him to hide in. Since then he just stays in the stone. He then got moved to a 55g tank a few months later. In January I freed up my other 75g tank moved the flowerhorn to that one and moved the Texas back to the original tank. Now the flowerhorn is 3x bigger and eats aggressive. But the Texas has only grown a little and rarely comes out of the stone. I also have never seen the Texas eat anything. I always fed my cichlids Hikari floating pellets and the flowerhorn loves them. But 9 times out of 10 whatever I feed the Texas I have to scoop out the next day. Tried nls no go. I tried a cube of bloodworms. He came out of the stone swam up to the cube then turned away and went back into the cave. And that was after not adding food for a week. Yesterday I put a platy in the tank. Came home today Texas is in his cave and the platy was dead. Looked like he had trauma to his gills or throat but hard to tell. Never had a fish so disinterested in food. My schedule for the last few months have been to try a little food once a week. But I always have to take it out untouched the next day. I did treat him with deworm meds forcefed and treated the whole tank. Also forcefed 3% epsom salt solution. No change. He doesn't have a sunken stomach. But I'm sure his lack of growth is due to him not eating. Any suggestions? I was thinking of trying beefheart and see if he would eat that.

My suggestion - get rid of him & get a fish that you will enjoy.

I second RD's advice. Order a midas from one of the reputable breeders that are discussed on here. I'm sure you could talk to one of them and get a great one that you really want and enjoy.

I must be a total idiot. I can't find the contact info for any breeders. Everyone has great things to say about COA, but I can't find any other info about them.

COA is in Florida. Jeff Rapps in New Jersey, if you want a vender closer (not that it matters with overnight shipping almost anywhere). You could try Wet Spot in Oregon.

my texas is like iceprizm's too, and I added dither fish a few days ago but he doesn't come out of hiding unless you stay still for 30...
