Hi I was thinking about picking up a red texas cichlid. I have noticed that the larger ones fetch a nice price tag. Occasionally, I have come across juveniles that have not colored up yet that are only 25 - 50 bucks. My question is if i buy a smaller one do they tend to color up well or is this a fish you need to buy a well colored adult? Lastly, I was thinking about trying one in my 75 gallon with my rose queen. Is this a big enough set up or does it have to go in my 50 by itself? Thanks

you buy and take them as they are. Some of those lesser priced ones most likely wont fade or color up. Only if you get lucky. If you happen to buy out of a good breeding, then possible a good % of the batch will fade.

If you want a rt, buy one that is already faded. An unfaded green texas called "RT" is not really a rt. It's a common sense thing that most ppl just cant understand. Anyways. If you buy an unfaded one, you are still hoping or hunting for a RT out of that one because you do not have one by buying an unfaded green one.

pros and cons for both though.

i think it's cool to try for fun with a nice unfaded green ones though. The best treat with those is having them fade while you have them. But I would only buy those from a good pair or if I breed them myself for me to appreciate them and care to have them.. good luck finding your rt. Not many nice ones at all out there. Very rare to see a nice one.

Thanks for the info. Its really helpful. The other thing I wanted to ask is how aggressive of a cichlid are the Texas? Thanks

i had a red texas eat (kill) 2 cat fish in a week, mean lil fish she was.

I have 8 of those myself. Pretty amazing deal and it gives you that chance to buy a number of them and see what happens.
