Anyone with experience with these fish as i was told buy a guy who hade some 2-3 inch babies for sale that a female would live very comfortable in a 50 gallon tank i was a bit skeptical on this. He told that he keeps his male in a 55 also both fish are single fish
 
There's a current thread on motaguense if you'd like to see how large some grow. Females stay smaller than males so like rocksor said it might be a little tight width wise but it should work in a 55 for quite some time.
 
Because females tend to grow to a lessor size, you might be able to house one in a 55, at least for while.
As it matured, I doubt that any other fish would last with it in a tiny tank like a 55 though.

I've shown this guy in other threads but here's my male. They are really good fish to watch. I also have a female not as big but still showing some lovely colour.

I just got my first one is a baby, know more then .5” I’m Excited to see if it’s a male or female
