Could anyone give me tips on determining male or female? I bought these 2 from an lfs this weekend. I was trying to find a male and female out of the group but they all looked near identical. So I picked out the dominant one and a smaller one. They are a little battered. In a 125 gal at the moment.
Yeah I believe they are both female as well. Generally there's a couple key differences between males and females in this specie. The female generally get all the red coloration and large cheek spot(s) while the males tend to be more of a light tan color while tiny cheek spots. I'll attach a pic of both male and female so you can see the differences between the 2 yourself.
Notice how the male looks like he has freckles on his face while the female only has the 2 large spots on her cheeks.
Here are a couple obvious gender ID cues
Males tend to have small spots on the gill plate and lower jaw.
male above, female below.
Females jaw a gill plate tend to have fewer or no small spots.
and obviously females tend to show ore orange
and their facial profile is more torpedo shaped
male much stepper less "pointed" in comparison
