I have a pair of motas right now. The female is about 5.5" and the male is only about 4". I just put them in a 40 breeder and divided it. The male crossed the divider within the first hour and there was no immediate fight. I only wanted them to get used to the sight of each other at first, so after watching them for about 20 minutes (and seeing minimal aggression) I netted the male and dropped him back on his side of the divider.

I hope to one day breed these two. Any tips on getting the pair to bond without much damage to either?

if one is not bothering the other i see no reason for the divider..but i would use it for the first couple of times at night...then when your home and able to watch them, do without the divider...try it----but keep an eye on them...

Well shortly after I made this post, the female jumped the divider and beat up the male just a little. While I was at work today, she jumped it again and and now they are both swimming around each other and are super colored up. I'm guessing they are bonding.

I must make some awesome dividers. Doesn't stop anything.

I have a male & female paratilapia polleni (small spot) and am doing the same thing. I cut some egg crate/light diffuser to size, then took a section of black pvc piping drilled some small holes & zipped tied it to the top of the egg crate to discourage the male from jumping.

I had them together in a 180 gal tank for half a day and the female was beaten badly.

Could you post a picture of your "awesome divider"-just for fun?
