I've come to terms that these fish will never be completely docile toward each other, even if I buy them a tank with 2x the previous gallons, every 6 weeks.
My female had a great hiding spot...but her fins were still available for her mate to chew on-and he did. Three days of her not coming out, looking like she has fin rot, no eating, nothing had me scared for her...again...
This time instead of panicking, I made more spots, new places she can go where he cannot.
I'm planning a tank remodel, so for now this will have to do. It's not the prettiest set up, but Buddy & Chica are safe now and hopefully will get along again.

I plan on making a better situation for her in the morning. It would be great if they fought, got sick, broke things, etc during the daytime when the hardware store was open

Agree with rodders a divider with a hole big enough for the female works for my pair when the male gets too aggressive with her she just goes to the other side

They were in a 125 but yesterday I had to move her. He stayed, she is in a 100 g alone. There is something else incredibly wrong with her and I don't know what it is or how to treat. Gping to lfs in 1 hour when it opens for help and antibiotics, antifungal etc.
Her tail looks chewed off, around .5 inches is gone, clamped fins, white strings of slime coming from all over her, cloudy eyes with a film...the male is still ok.

that sounds gnarly.... like a massive skin infection. hope it's not too late.

She is still trying to win the fight with whatever is killing her. Lfs owner told me.most likely a bacterial infection and that melafix, salt, antibiotics if all else fails were all I could do. I moved her to a 38 gallon tank next to her mates tank because they were so sad. He hasn't been affected by whatever this is yet. She is still clamped up and slime coat is coming off as more slime is made.
Parameters are perfect-I check 2x daily
Also, 2x daily 25-50% wc.

As of right now, my female RTM is not improving but is not getting worse, either. I stopped the metroplex today because it seemed to be harming her after 4 days. She is such a fighter. I've never seen an animal so wanting to live-she starts clamping her fins but shakes herself and then swims back and forth across the smaller 55 hospital tank for a few minutes. Her mate is not doing so well, though. He won't eat and only swims long enough to look for her then retreats back to his flower pot. It's so sad
