I have had a red tiger oscar in a 150 gallon tank for about three months. He is doing great. He started at about one inch and is up to about five inches already. The tank currently has one clown loach and a small tire track eel (about 5 inches so far). There is a lot of hiding places for the clown and they all get along great. The oscar eats mostly pellets but I occasionally throw in some freeze dried blood worms or live black worms. One thing I noticed is the red in the oscar is almost completely gone. Is this normal? Will it come back? Also, I was thinking about getting a JD or something. Any thoughts what would make a great tank mate? I can always move the TT if that is going to pose a problem, but Id like to leave the clown in .... he does some nice cleaning :) I was thinking about adding another clown because I heard they are better in groups. Anyways, enough rambling. Any thoughts?

Sometimes breeders and dealers give oscars and other fish hormones to boost their color. Young cichlids are by nature bland in color. A one inch bright red oscar doesn't live long in the wild, it's a target. Even the brightest most colorful cichlids start out as drab little fry. The color will get stronger as it grows and can be aided by feeding shrimp, krill, and plankton. The minerals in their shells will bring out the reds.

Awesome info! Thanks! I picked up some live brine shrimp today and the fish seems to like it. Ill be sure to add them to the feeding rotation. That takes my list to pellets, blood worms, black worms, and brine shrimp.

it seems you a gets a good diet.
Oscar transformations can be quite remarkable.
My red has turned to bronze within a year.
Do you have any pics for us????

My camera is not very good ... but here are some.

I think he looks great.
JD's are tricky sometimes it works sometimes it don't. I have one that I bought at the same time I got my O. So far no problem but JD's grow much much slower then O's.
So my JD is about 4 inches and my O is about 9ish. So no problems yet.
