In the shadow of death.....
Hey,
My oscar has come down with some sort of red inflammation on his dorsal fin. He goes from panting in the corner of his tank to doing doughnuts all over his tank. Can anyone help me please. I love the little guy.

Get the API liquid test tube kit at PetsMart or Petco and test the water for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. Ammonia & nitrites (with an 'I') need to be '0' and nitrates (with an 'A') need to be under 20 ppm. By far the most common reason for Oscars to have problems is water quality.

Do you have pictures? I am guessing hemorrhagic septicemia here but we need the pics and water parameters first before we recommend any treatment for this case.

The red patch has disappeared. But hes still sulking in the corner with the heater and air stone. I'd an ammonia test an it was 1.0 going on blue so i did another water change and added ammonia lock the thing is im cycling a tank so it's gonna be another three weeks till he's back in his new home.

What test kit are you using? What are your nitrite and nitrate? What filter do you use and how big is the temporary housing?
