A couple of weeks ago I noticed my canister filter wasn't doing much filtering, and when I took it apart I found that the main central tube was cracked.I tried to stick it with superglue, but it was having none of it so I mixed a pile of epoxy adhesive (like Araldite) and stuck it all back together with that (I've used epoxy resin before without problems).

I waited 3 hours for it to go off and then reassembled the filter and plugged it all back in.

Everything seemed ok for a couple of days but then the water took on a very noticeable reddish hue,so I took the filter out and found that the glue I'd repaired it with was all completely covered in a red fluffy substance.

I've cleaned the filter of this red substance, and the fish have been happy enough throughout this episode.

Is the red fluffy substance a type of algae,or was it some sort of chemical reaction?

probably some king of bacteria that thrives on one of the chems in your epoxy. it probably wouldn't have happened if you had allowed time for a full cure before re-assembling. but then maybe it would have, there's some pretty impressive biologicals out there.

Here''s hoping that now the glue's cured the problem will cure itself too.
