Hello everyone,
I have been looking into setting up a predator tank and after doing some research I really want to go with a wolf fish. I choose the red wolf fish because it stays a lot smaller than the other ones. I would prefer to keep the wolf fish by itself (are there any benefits in keeping multiple ones together, like more activity?). I also plan in planting the tank. What would you guys recommend for substrate? I wanted to dirt the tank and cap it with black sand. Does anyone know if these guys like to digg? Also what tank size would you recommend for a one?
I look forward to your responses!

Keep them alone some have had luck with multiple but a large tank is required. One red wolf eryery would be ok in a 40.breeder i have my kessleri in a 40 breeder. I prefer river rocks woth a sand.bottom for amazonian planted look but any is ok. Make sure to read everything you can about these guys. Where are you planning to buy from??

sweet, I do plan on going with just one. The main reason why I wanted to go with black sand is because the colors on fish seem to pop out more on a dark substrate/background. I was hoping they would be comfortable in a 30L or 40B. I am trying to find the wider 30L that is 36x18x12 (LxWxH) but it seems all of the ones I see are 36x12x18. I wont be starting this project till after I am done with my finals (end of the month) so I still have some time to plan stuff out. As for where I plan on buying it, I haven't decided yet. I want to speak with the owner of the LFS I go to and see if he has any reliable sources, if not I see aquascapeonline currently has some for sale.

Yes if you go for more then one they'll be hiding from each other a lot, I keep one with bichirs and gymnogeophagus and it works quite well. Make sure whatever you put in with it is arrmored (things like scale-less catfish will get torn up) such as Raphael armoured cats, even some big corydoras specie, bichirs, etc. I've never seen a wound on any of my bichirs from the wolf.

MAKE SURE there are 0 holes in your lid, so many of them die from jumping and no one noticing till too late its not even funny, mine got through a heater hole that I thought it was too wide to fit through for quite a while

yes my friend had 2 mala wolfs and lost one due to jumping out of the tank. I plan on making it jump proof.
