Hey Guys looking for some advice, i currently have a 5.5" Red wolf fish (ery ery) and a 3.5" peru Wolf (ery sp) both in the same 55gal Tank (Yes the Tank will be too small when they grow up) is there any good way to avoid Conspecific Behavior with Wolves? I have added extra cover so that if my red wolf chases the SP the SP should be able to get away. my LFS said that possibly adding some Convicts or Firemouths to the tank could take some of the aggression off both wolves, Sorta Like if you were trying to Breed Jack Dempseys. any and all thoughts are appreciated, the tank also has a 6" Needlenose Gar a 2.5" Cory and 1 7" Crippled Peco.

Thanks.

The aggression is a hit and miss. It could happen it could not. Mostly based on personality. hiding spots and tank sizes can be a small factor. Personally, i wouldn't put hiding spots since each wolf will actually create territories. I wouldn't add any cichlids since they could be a bit aggressive too. The cory is definately a future goner and I would remove the pleco since it might suck the slime coat off the wolf fish. That could cause serious diseases. Dithers for wolf fish aren't much help IMO. You could add some larger fish that swim at the top or middle of the tank.

I disagree.. I believe hiding spots are an absolute must. I keep four Rainbows together and the need to be able to get out of each other sightlines I think this would not work. They really enjoy having cover such as PVC pipes, driftwood caves, and dense planting. I have tried to keep cichlids with mines and it has not worked well. The cichlids I have tried are oscars and slavini's bothe kept the wolves from cruising the tank . In addition I do think tank size is a factor I have had my group in a 75, 120H,and a 150g. They seem to much happier in the longer 150g.

So Far the larger Red wolf hasnt been overly Aggressive towards the SP just territorial but i have been keeping them Divided with a screen while i am away, im not worried about the pleco because as i said he is kind of crippled from a birth defect or something, so he is stupid slow lol. suprisingly the Cory gets along with the wolf pretty well. he will pile on top of the big wolf and is just forgotton.

Indy whats your secret to keeping them together? and have you ever had problems with them fighting? and could you post a pic of your tank setup?

I USED to also agree that wolves needed hiding spots but after some experiences, I noticed that they were less aggressive with no hiding spots. They love to fight for hiding spots. If there aren't any, there will be less fighting. It could be based on personality. There could to be some kind of aggression either way.

Once again I say keep plently of hiding places or they will seek each other out particularly if you happen to have a dominant one. I am pretty sure if you put a group of mature rainbow wolf fish with no cover it will not end well and this is from my personal experiences with these guys.

Here area several pics of my set up and group...

Lix.ma14.. Have you kept these in a group and if so do have any pics of your set up? I am just curious to see others keping a group of these and what their set ups look like.

Cheers!

looks like i am definitly in need of some pvc pipes. im sure my wolves would love them. i might also try to do some sort of "shelf" against the one side of the tank that i can get some pvc suspended on, since both of my wolves like to sleep wedged behind my whisper filters. i will try to get some pics of my tank up soon.
