Hey all, been a few weeks since ive posted been busy with work. I am looking for everyones opinion as to the behavior change in my Redfin pickerel. Everthing was fine up until about Friday. I went out and purchased a heater for his tank as he tempature was abput 68 degrees and raised to it to around 72 degrees thinking the warmer water would increase metabolism/growth. However since thdn he has changed to a darker color, does not eat and is very lathergic. He is used to eating around 3-4 feeders a day. He has not eaten anything thus far in three days. He sits at the bottom or at the very top unmoving, however he spooks very easily and thrashes about the tank. My water parameters are perfect. 0 amonia levels 7 Ph and nitrates are alittle high around 35 ppm. However that is due to the fets I was using for the plants which I have always done. Let me know your thoughts. Thank you as walys guys.

Maybe take off the heater. I can't say for sure since I haven't kept any Esocids but that'd be my guess as to what would help.

Potentially silly question, but did you verify that the tank temp was actually 72? I've noticed that many of my heaters, even my eheim jagers, are not calibrated correctly. If that is the case, your temp may be a bit higher than you think.
The other question, which I hate to ask because I hate when people ask me, is what size tank is he in? If he has grown, he may feel cramped in his current set-up.
Otherwise, I've got nothing. My money is on water being too warm though.

Hope everything works out. This fish is on my "seriously want" list right now.

Heya Dive long time. There is no silly question I have a digital thermometer has maintained 72-73 degrees. I took out the heater already he seems to be doing alittle better in the matter of ten minutes. I have always kept his temp 68-70, I started doing some reading as I always try to setup the perfect environment for my fish and everything I read said they prefer temps about 74-76. Hes in a 20GL right now. He will be upgraded to a 75g along with the two other pickerel I have in that tank once they are big enough he will not feast on them. There were three others in there, however the smallest one got offed when I went out of town for two days. Left 25 feeders in there. Ccame back two small pickerel 1 big one and no feeders. So he is sequestered for now. Ill keep you guys posted hopefully the water temp is all it was. Do you guys think 3 days of water emp being to high can have lasting effects?

3 days? I doubt it. I've done much worse.

Embarrassingly, I had my odoe pike in a 40br when I first got him. He would eat, then later that night puke it up. Then eat, and puke. And he was always pretty still. On the second day I stuck my hand in while changing the water and got shocked! My heater was actually leaking (serious) voltage into the tank - enough to make me uncomfortable. I have no idea how that fish survived, but he's tripled in size since then and is doing fine.

Yep i was thinking the same thing johnnytaboo just said the heater may be putting off some electricity in the tank

I unknowingly had my 75 gallon at 84 F a few weeks ago for about 2 months! I know have the heater unplugged and it's running at 75 which is right where I want it.

Ok I took the hwater off and stuck it in my chiclid tank and they started acring strange as well. I had my wife stick her hand in the tank and we both felt tingling in our finger tips. So im assuming I purchased a defrctive heater. The pickerel is still just sitting in the corner un interested in his feeders. Hoping he bouces back soon.

I've never had one, though I hope to soon, but from what I've read they're tough fish. Standard procedure for now: keep food available, and the water clean and he should be fine. Not sure about salt with these guys? Do people add salt with cold water fish in times of stress?
