Is this fish usually super aggresive? I got given one a fortnight ago and yesterday it killed my festae of the same size:irked: not happy! its only 4'' total length and always on the move harrassing other fish. I dont think its pure syn that might change aggression it rocks three vertical black bars accross its body half the day.

anyway you could get pics to try to narrow down ID? "redhead cichlid" can be one of several species, some of which are more aggressive than others. :)

the fish in my avatar is a pure synspilum. what does the black horizontal bar look like on your fish? does it run the full body length or only about 1/2 to 1/3 the length of the body?

Good question! I was going to pick one up on saturday. But if it is going to kill my Festae I will have to get something else. A Synspilum is one of the three cichlids that I planned on adding to my tank based on the success of others on this site. I hope that your situation is rare. Best of luck with your tank and sorry about your Festae.

their not to bad they are the most aggresive veija next to the black belt which is the worst as far as being aggressive veija. But they are a community cichlid some individuals may be worse than others. I like to keep a big vieja or red devil as the dominate fish in a community with parachromis or festae or anything rough. maybe like double the size of the other cichlids to keep things chill in the tank as they not out to kill al the other fish like having one of the other rough customers as the dominate fish all they do most of the time is eat and move the rest of the fish out the way. How big is the tank? do you have a lot of rocks , site breakers , hiding places ? another thing is for fish under say ten inches an inch is a big deal in size difference alot in bulk. You also have to know what is more aggresive when mixing fish. In my experience festae don't get reall agressive till they put on size ( 8 or 9 inches). if they are close to same size and you have site breakers chalk it up to a fluke. all is my experience and my opp.
But i done alot of community stuff and stuff not suggested as I never had the tank space to just rock pairs or species tanks . You can crowd ca/sa cichlids like affricans and that will keep aggression in check. Its probably irresponsible for me to say that but it def. works. there will be some losses in trial and error.

Thanks for the replies, the tanks a 130gallon with lots of caves and drift wood and the odd plant.
