redtail cat just got attacked!!!

my redtail just got attacked by my knife while i was watching.. my red tail has a hole through his gill down to the bottom of his jaw. it looks like he is having a hard time breathing will he live or is this pretty much a death blow?

thats the thing my knife has never attacked anything normally he gets beat up..

Do plenty of water changes and keep a close eye on the wound for fungal developments. The knife must also be isolated to avoid any possible future damage.
