So I've had my redtail for almost a year now and we bought it when it was still a baby, but today I heard it trying to jump out of the tank or something, I'm not really sure because I wasn't watching it at the time, but after I checked it and was checking it out via a net, after I put it back it just laid down and wasn't moving after that, I'm not sure if it's choking or something, because it's mouth is just open and is usually closed.

Maybe it’s trauma related. Would check ur water quality and make sure it’s pristine. Dim lights and wait it out. Need some time. Would hold on feeding. Can add a little at salt 1tsp per g.

Welcome to the MFK!

What fish are we talking about?

Very hard to say from such short and general description. Photos would help as would posting your water parameters and how they are measured. Size of fish, size of tank, tank mates, water change schedule, diet, aeration, etc.

If you have a solid lid and a big fish jumps with force, the head area, jaw, eyes etc are first in line for trauma. Maybe your redtail has damaged it's jaw. All you can do at this point is observe, and as others have said keep your water spot on.

I am rather sure now that the mysterious fish "redtail" had died before this thread was even started. Fish often die of hypoxia or stress with an open mouth.

If I had to guess, the OP will never come back because in their mind "No fish, no problem", which, if so, is so totally wrong.

"No learning = huge problem, now and later."
