Hello everyone I am new to monsterfishkeepers.com oaks opiated this in the redtail info thread and was hoping someone could help me out. I currently have a 19 inch hybrid spotted shovelnose redtail catfish (at least I think it is) Earlier today I noticed on the front left fin/barb some kind of growth with a split (pics attached) The fish is about 3 years old and this is the first issue that I have had with it. Has anyone seen this happen before? Any words of advice will be greatly appreciated.

I don't think it's anything major. My RTC x tsn would get that from being netted sometimes. It should heal quickly.

Looks like an old, healed break in the man ray = spine. Can be fresh too. Most usually no big deal when so far from base.

The ID is correct - TSNxRTC hybrid.

Average 3-year olds are ~2.5'.

Ehmr, no offence but what tank size was that guy raised in? He should be a Little larger at that age mate..

@Karl K no offense taken, I agree he is too big for the aquarium he's in. I'm currently setting up a 150 gal to move him to hopefully by the end of the month.

He's gonna outgrow that too D: 19inch in a 2 wide tank? Dude, you better get a pond for him, hes already a little stunted. However he has beautiful spotting:)

My RTC is is less than a 7 months old and is over 24", he's in a 240, till the 2000 gallon is up and running.

Although I totally agree with Karl, and moreover, I suppose the tank the fish is in right now is terribly small (and 150 would be too small too) - hence, the fish is skittish, stressed, flighty, and hence it broke its pectoral spine while darting in a small tank... BUT... FWIW, the OP is not asking for any advices on the tank size. I hope the OP grasped the hint and will do what he will do.
