My redtail keeps surfacing to the top it stays there for a bit then heads back down..it looks as it it's trying to suck in some air..any idea why it does this?..it's not breathing hard..it's eating well..

Usually this would suggest low oxygen in the water, I'd check filtration and water quality; fix accordingly. Or it could be a catfish thing, in which case an expert will correct me

Yes Rachel..he floats to the top..and just sits there...is there something I should be concerned about.. He's a good 2foot long cat..I'm thinking he's growing n need more o2 but I got enough filtration and bubbles..

Its a catfish thing. My bullhead does it, hell my bullhead will float vertically for hours with his face in the gravel...still going strong lol.

If he is just gulping air, no problem. If breathing increases tho, several parasites attacks the gills, so be on the look out for that. I would increase O2, just to be sure it's not the cause. Of course make sure water parameters are in order and no additives(algaefix etc) in water.
