This thread is a follow on really to my "Borneo red finned silver shark" thread, which I will revisit regularly. I mentioned in that thread that I also got some redtailed barbs too, Discherodontus Ashmeadi.

I thought it only right, once out of quarantine and settled in my 360, to start a stand alone grow out thread to detail their progress.

As with all the fish in my 360, these guys are from the far east. Reports have them maxing out at about 5-6", they are currently about 3". I have a shoal of eight but unlike my Beardless, Borneo redfinned and Filament barbs, which tend to stick together, these guys are as happy on their own as they are shoaling up.

They're a great little fish. In quarantine they were extremely washed out but once in my 360 they almost immediately got their jet black tips on their dorsal fins and the blood red tips on their tails.

As far as I'm aware they are quite an oddball, not many people have them. I look forward to bringing updates once in a while. They are a very fast fish, the photo below is the clearest I could get of this beautiful fish.

celebrist celebrist , all the pictures I've seen of mine only show red on the tails. No red on the dorsal fin, unlike yours, at all, just a jet black tip.

And the Apollo shark looks nothing like yours either!

It would be interesting to find out the true identity of the ones you had way back, they look a really nice fish.

Unless mine eventually develop the red on the dorsal I don't know. It's a puzzler.

Edit to above post.

celebrist celebrist , my mistake. Those in your picture are indeed your rasbora species. Apologies.

I mistakenly thought you were showing me those as redtailed barbs!

Yeah, no pictures of "apollo" from 30 plus years ago and he was definitely not an apollo shark that is seen in the hobby those look very different for sure

I'd almost forgotten about this thread regarding my Redtailed barbs (Discherodontus Ashmeadi). Photographs are difficult so I thought I'd upload a very short video just to give you an idea of what they're like. They're always on the move, flickering about in the current of my powerhead.

I still have my original eight and, on average, they're about 4" apiece. Maybe I'll get another inch out of them yet. They're just a great little fish, I'm so glad I stumbled upon them. Dee eng Dee eng , did you end up picking some up?

Yes I did pick them up and unfortunately I had to shut down one tank and put them with some bigger fishes and the all got eaten. 🤦‍♂️ FML… Biggest one was just under 5” and they were all between 3 1/2-4” .
