I have a eheim 2080 and Im having some reduced flow problems. I have taken the filter apart a few times and after a cleaning it runs great, then a few days will go by and it will have slowed down. WHat I have in the filter is, 1st tray is eheim substrate that came with it, and a white filter pad over it, the 2nd tray is sea chem matrix with a white pad over it and the 3rd tray is the same as the 2nd. Then the top tray and the motor head. Anyone else have this problem?

I don't use pads in any of the lower trays, just the bio media. I put the pads up top as the instructions suggest.

Read the manual.

Make sure you clean the impellar housing and impellar. I noticed a big improvement after I clean this. The more foam you use the more restriction you'll get.

I have taken it apart and cleaned it well twice in the past week. I know everything is well cleaned and lubed. I have all of the pads in the right spot. I just cant figure it out. Maybe the motor is going out? I have read that that is not very likely for a eheim, but Im not sure what else it could be.
edit: I have the correct amount of foam filter pads, I have what is label in the manual.

Ok I am sorry then, I thought you were using white filter pads on the top of each basket. That would definately slow the flow sooner than expected.

I replace the white filter pad with each maintenance but have used the same blue sponge for like 4 years or so. You have the bue sponge on top?

I need to clean the hoses on ours at least once a year and notice a big improvement in flow, I would do this more often but it is a big PITA.

I doubt the motor is going bad. The impellar is the only moving part. If the magnet causes the impellar to spin, the motor is fine. How old is the impellar? I would guess it is worn down and so flow is decreasing. Check to make sure the impellar is in a solid piece and that no parts of it are damaged or have become separated. Also check the impellar shaft to make sure it is clean and intact.

I checked the impeller, its intact and the magnet is very strong lol, almost cut my finger when I put it back. I dont replace the white floss but its not very dirty, I have prefilters on the intakes. I do have the blue pad, and I tried removing the prefilters as well and no luck. Its not a huge problem, Im sure Ill figure if out, and it is still running lol. Thanks though
EDIT I actually just replaced all of the hosing.

I had the same problem on the Eheim 2028 awhile back. It was actually the prefilter which was causing the Eheim with the slow flow. I replaced the prefilter and it worked good for about a week. Eventually, I ended up removing the prefilter and only use the blue pads and all bio media. A prefilter is a good option if you're planning to use your Eheim for bio filtration but if you want to gain the benefit of mechanical filtration you got to remove the prefilter and loose some of the floss and foams.

I have three Eheims. In one setup I use prefilter and let the HOB Emp do the mechanical work. In my other tank I let the Eheim do the bio and mechanical filtration.
