Hi All,
This may seem like a weird question but, I am wondering if anybody has any advice on reducing aggression. My 8" Female Red Bay Snook (P. Splendida) has been hybridizing with my 5" Salvini for the past 8-9 months, but due to various issues (other fish eating fry, vacation, etc.) I have no fry currently. (For doubters on this unusual combo please check my other thread on this). Recently, it appears as though the Snook has been beating up on the Salvini (More than usual breeding). Im concerned if this continues the pair will split up and won't hybridize. Tank mates are 2 other female snooks(Red and Green), a Teugelsi, and Synodontis Angelicus. Water conditions are spot on with a pH: 7.1 , Ammonia: 0, Nitrite: 0, Nitrate: .5 ppm, and Temp is 80.
Thanks in advance,
Lorenzo

Target fish never worked for me. When a cichlid is beating up another he just ignores the target fish and continues to beat up the same fish.
How is the aggression against the other fish, and what size tank are they in?

For a target fish to be a good target fish, it/they need to draw the attention of the cichlids, causing them to focus the majority of their aggression on it/them instead of each other. I would recommend some of the more placid africans, especially the common ones like Electric Yellows. They're mellow enough, and as cichlids they represent competition (even if they africans) and yet they won't hybridize with the americans. Plus they should be relatively common that if they were to be killed off, it wouldn't be anything big, at all.

What I did one time was throw a large group of African cichlids in my 100 gallon when my jd was beating up everyone. The mbuna where so mean no one messed with them, and all the added action calmed the jd down fast. After a few months I took the mbuna put and the jd is still calm to this day. I think I had 7 red zebras lol. Probably not the best idea but it worked.
