Is there any real effective way to do this? Even though I run a clean tank, I still get a lot of scale buildup (especially all along the edges of the glass, the plastic tank rim, and that's also what contributes to the degradation of the plastic glass hinges. I've checked my water, and it's not classified as "hard". Is there any additive that can help reduce this?

Thanks!

3cubic feet pretty cheap from Lowes but really dusty so you will need something as fine as a coffee filter to hold it as well as easily change it out. I've didn't see scale build up when I was making peat water with sphagnum peat moss.

As far as degradation of hinges, if it's not the water or exposure to sunlight, it's just continual bending back and forth plus the quality of the plastic.

Well the quality of the plastic from the Aqueon hinges is pathetic to begin with - the "hinge" area is SO thin, it's ridiculous - but all designed to keep you buying more.

But I do notice a LOT of scale build up all over the top edges, glass and plastic, and am not sure how to effectively reduce it. So, are you saying to add sphagnum moss in a fine filter bag? In the filter or just hanging in the tank? And how do you determine how much to use? I always thought peat water was dark?

Thanks!

you could even use a clean sock, but you need to place it in the filter. I would put a handful first and make sure it doesn’t lower your kh below 4 degrees
