hello i was wondering if i can reduce my lighting by lifting the fixture higher off of the tank buy building something like this. http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=11162 . dont know why i havent thought of this before..i kicked my self when i saw what Mr.Barr has done. its a great idea. if this would work to reduce my lighting, how high do you think it would take to lower my watts (65w pc) over a 20 long. thanks again

ive that setup before, ive been wanting to try it, looks great! as for how high, i think this is gonna be a trial and error thing. i would start at about 8" above the tank and adjust as necessary

lifting the light will reduce the amount of light in your tank. not because more air would stop more light just that the higher the light is off the tank the more spread it will get and that gives you less concentrated light directly into the tank. so it would reduce the intensity of the light

so when you say it would lower intesity, i could get away with lower light set up then?

ya you should be able too. but most plants will do fine in higher light. the only one that doesnt do better in high light is java fern (so i have heard)

just lay printer paper under the light. I just cut the paper long ways and laid it under my strip light. gets the job done

its the coralife 65w..so the reflector isnt that great. it the the job when the tank was heavly planted, but a friend bought all the plants and eco for his tank. i just put new eco in with anarchis, vals, and some other non-equatic plant for now. Instead of a planted tank with fish its now a south american puffer tnk with plants. i really just want a good amount (moderate-heavy) of low light plants for them so i dont have to do the high-tech maint.
