Back in the day when I researched rope fish before I owned them, I remember reading that they like groups. I've always kept them singly, but was thinking about going with a group this time.

Does anyone keep their reedfish in groups? If so, how many? Any difference in behavior?

I have no experience keeping them, but I have seen 2 together no problem. they are related to bichirs, and I think have a similar disposition.

There are those who recommend keeping Rope (Reed) Fish, Erpetoichthys calabaricus, in groups. I have kept dozens of them over the years and really haven't found them to be any more or less 'happy' whether they're in a group or not. They do seem to get along reasonably well together so keeping them in a group isn't out of the question but it isn't something, in my experience, that you HAVE to do.

Thanks guys, you've given me the info I was looking for.

I think that site I had read was talking out it's ass... the rope is doing great by itself, so shall it remain.
