A lot of reefers say no to trace elements. I use calcium. A lot of my friends use reef buffers and our corals do about the same as far as growth.and happiness. As far as feeding the answer is yes, you do need to feed your LPS and soft corals. There are a wide range of coral food out there but you just need to find what your corals like best. I use reef snow and limpits reef buffet and Dt's live phyto. They gobble it up. Sps corals don't need to be fed. The light gives them what they need as far as food.

corals eat a wide variety of foods some more specific then others they are after all animals not plants - if you use any type of chemical applications like carbon, gfo, purigein, etc then yes it is wise to dose trace as this stuff removes it - test kits will tell you if and how much Alk elemental stuff to dose ( cal,mag,alk,etc...)

Don't dose traces, especially if they have iodine and strontium, both commonly added, both damaging to corals/inverts. Feed corals with phytoplankton/zooplankton depending on polyp mouth size/collection method, best to use live as uneaten wont just rot in the tank.
