Hi I want to convert my 55 gallon fowlr into a basic reef tank and was wondering if there is any way to make reef lighting out of home depot or canadian tire material like high output shop lights? plz help keep it simple I'm clueless when it comes to lighting as I've only kept fish only tanks...

That lighting isn't going to work for me cause of the exchange rate shipping etc... Any ideas on how i can DIY this lighting?

In order to get enought wpg (watts per gallon) out of shop lights its going to take quite a few of them which means a lot of heat! your probably going to want at least around 200 watts per gallon or more. I dont know all of the wattages t8 and t12's come in, and i dont know what you have access to. but by the time you buy the fixtures, and some decent bulbs it would pronanly be just as much, if not more then a t5. But IMO i would just save time and find a decent t5 like this one (model 2211). it comes with cooling fans, and maybe even LED moonlights.

...but... thats just what i would probably do.
