Looking to get a larger tank was wondering if a reef ready tank is necessary or not reef ready Some say having a cannister filter attracts nitrates so would like to know if a reef ready tank is the right thing?

None of my saltwater tanks are reef ready... I use hob overflows or my own custom pvc overflows. I like them because i can transfer them to each tank easily. So no, you do not need a reef ready tank to have any type of fish tank.
Sumps and overflows are good...maybe thats what they mean by reef ready though.
You can do it your own way though...so +1 for canuck. It doesnt need to say "reef-ready" to be a reef.
