So id like too set up a reef tank I've had freshwater forever but would like to get into salt I know next to nothing about it though any tips pointers or a basic step by step set up I should know? do you need an rodi unit or can I use my well water just looking for some more info thanks everyone

For the lighting do I need to have a day light and a different spectrum of light at night? Thanks for reply

Lighting depends what you want to keep. Soft corals will be fine with low light, most stonys will require higher light. What size tank are you looking at?

You can make a reef as simple or as complicated as you want. I am currently running a reef with no equipment other than a return pump and a light. No heater, sump, skimmer, doser, etc. This is possible because it is a very small system (7g) with frequent water changes. They make "All in one" tanks nowadays which are probably the simplest way to run a reef tank and are proven to work well. They have the "sump" built into the back of the tank.

I would recommend you join a reef focused forum. Google for them, there are a few large ones. MFK is great but you will get more responses for this on a reef forum.

Thank you Gourami Swami Gourami Swami I'm probably going to do a 20 long and I'm looking into the zoanthids to start as for the lighting does it matter if it's blue light or white light I'm not too sure because a lot of people suggest a bunch of different methods

Any decent light will have both blue and white, corals do well under a blue/indigo spectrum and it really makes the colors pop. But some white added in to make viewing easier (and photography possible) is a good idea too. If you are looking for cheap options, the hipargero LEDlight is very nice for 60$. One could work on a 20 long if you centered the corals under it, though two of them side by side would be much better, and still cheaper than just about any other option

Do you use rodi water Gourami Swami Gourami Swami
I use distilled water purchased in gallon jugs from the store. Tap water will be no good for a reef, RODI or distilled is the way to go. Many LFS's also sell pre-mixed saltwater, which is probably fine as long as you trust the LFS to change their RO filters, and you're happy with the brand of salt they use.
