Is it ok to lubricate a sticky/oily reel with WD40? Or would it contaminate the line?
I have a few nice reels that have been ruined by not being rinsed off after a fishing trip...

I wouldn't apply WD 40. As stated, try a lubricant made for fishing reels. Avoid spraying it on the line too.

I just realized a typo in the OP. I mean sticky/RUSTY reel.
Thanks for the replies, I will see if they carry that sort of thing at my local bait/tackle store :)

i just spray some on a napkin and just rub them down. to much grease makes the gears stick.

watch oil is also good gives you better casting distance than reel oil

You can use WD-40, but if you do make sure you get all the old reel lube off, and continue to use WD-40 to clean your reels. The two don't like to mix.......
