I hope to have more time to go fishing this year, and I need to buy some new gear. My question is about casting reels, I have seen that some of you guys use them, but I don't know much about them. I mainly use pretty small sized crankbaits and I'm not sure if a casting reel or a spinning reel is more appropriate. My lake is stocked with Bluegills, yellow perch, and largemouth bass if that has any influence on my decision. If anyone who has a casting reel could give me the pro's/con's the help would be greatly appreciated. I will be buying from cabela's if anyone has a recomendation for a specific model or brand.

casting reels are good for lures like your crankbaits. i find it hard to use them on light or small lures like you might just for bluegill or perch. spinning reels tend to be pretty universal and wont cause as many headaches.

for catfishing i do like to use the casting reels though, i can throw my sinkers as far or short as id like but again its cause they have some weigh to them

yeah baitcasters are cool but not as easy. Cant go wrong with a nice spinning reel. I have both but if I needed to have one it would be a spinning.

spinning rods are great for everything, but i really love baitcasters for bass fishing, it takes some time to get down but once you've got it, it's totally worth it

Nothing messing with baitcasters but throwing light baits ill say spinning reels are better, but if your cast heavy lures all day spinning reels can't compare !!

my freind became skilled with a baitcaster float fishing for trout in rivers, but they are difficult to use without heavy gear on the end

This is honestly a personal/opinional question but i will tell you what i think. Bait caster it casts a mile..and it takes some skill and a lot of patience and practice..also a really good reel is something like Abu Garcia or Shimano (expensive)..i also like Pfluegers to..but if your casting smaller baits spinning is pretty much better..but if your going crankbaits hands down baitcaster..
