Refugium

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wow! Ok that could require a book. Yes, the only thing you would need is a Skimmer. A Refuium is a type of Water Filtraton System, that can either go under the cabniet, behind the cabniet, or hang on the tank. It can contain just about anything from sand, live rock, and plants, to a cleaning crew. Heaters, the Skimmer and if it's under the Tank with Plants it will require lights. So, depending on what your looking for depends on the exact answer you would probably get. Oh ya, depending on what type of Tank you have also. You could also feed the tank from there. It is the best type of filtration system I have found.

Above post is awesome.

Also, what size tank are you talking about putting a refug. on? If it's a nano, I've found a really easy setup is a good sized backpack filter filled with macro algae. If should get enough light from being on the back of your tank. You'll need to get a screen or netting for the output flow of the filter though, or you'll have chunks of algae floating all over the place.

You can get the macro algae at most saltwater shops for extremely cheap. I don't think I've ever even paid for mine.

well basically a fuge is a source of continuous food most people make the mistake of adding a fish, invert to it and defeat the purpose of having the fuge. What a fuge does is give's you a alternate place to place some sand or miracle mud, rubble rock, and macro algaes to remove nutrients from the display tank. This area will also grow all your zoo-plankton's as a continual source of food for your tank. It will require just some moderate flow a basic light and that's it.

yes sir alot of people do that they also take off 2 pellers of the impeller to slow the flow on it as well for more contact time in fuge for the water.

pretty awesome idea. any tricks on keeping a little sand bed in there? or are you just kind of limited to rock rubble and macro algae?

sand might not be the best idea, but you could give it a try. The way i see it your limited space as it is. sand isnt going to be as helpful as macro algae or even some rock rubble unless you have several inches.
