Hello again all,

Silly question but one that I feel requires an answer haha. With a refugium, would it still be required to do water changes weekly, or would I just test the water weekly and if the levels are off then do a water change? There doesn't seem to be a definite answer (or maybe I just haven't been looking in the right areas). After this, I think I'll have a pretty good grasp on refugiums and their benefits to the tank. I just got a 20g and a 29g for free so I was planning on doing a micro-reef to "test the waters", if I'm allowed to use the expression. ;)

As always, any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you for taking the time to read the post.

Much love,

Regularly scheduled water changes are still one of the best things you can do for growth and health of fish and corals. Fuges also take a while to have a real impact on nitrates and phosphates. So I would test, and see what your parameters are like. If you want to cut back on water changes, just test.

@Heathd: Thanks for the input. I kinda figured it was a "too good to be true" scenario, but just wanted to make sure. I don't mind the work that goes in to maintaining a tank, just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to screw something up by doing water changes, if that makes any sense at all.

test the water. Most low nutrient tanks that little water changes are done to are VERY lightly fed and VERY lightly stocked. Water changes wont hurt anything if you do them and dont need it, but could be detrimental if you dont do them and do need to. Just sayin.
