Not for nitrates. The anerobics take care of those, but it's a slower process.

Never thought of mud as an anerobic bed tho. Sand yes, Mud no... I'll have to look into that.

Dr Joe, remember my thread on this idea of a refugium titled under "evil nitrates"? Well this is the refugium I am going to use for that purpose. 24 hour lighting and the mud will not be the miracle mud though, but some type of nutrient rich mud. Here is a picture of the fuge. I will be converting all fresh to salt and one reef system, but back to the original post, refugiums in fresh water work excellent for nitrates with enough plants.

Exactly like the picture in that link, but eliminate the bio balls, that small amount will just create nitrates after a short time. Nothing but a fine filter in the beginning where the water enters. Grow plenty of plants in there and will suck up the nitrates and reduce algea.
