Hello friends.

I was seeking tips for setting up a new tank I will be getting. Here's the scenario:

I'm getting a 55 gallon tank for free that's been sitting outside of a friend of a friend's house for over a year. The tank looks nice, and seems to be in good shape. No obvious cracks, the sealant looks intact, all that stuff, and when I move it I will of course check for leaks. The problem is that it's been sitting out in the dirt for god knows how long and needs a good, thorough cleaning. The question is, what should I use to clean it? I've been looking through the FAQ on the site and I've seen some people say vinegar and water and others just say elbow grease. Could I get an authoritative answer with some reasoning behind it?

Also, are there any other additional considerations I should keep in mind when setting up this tank? In case you were wondering, it's for my 6-inch flowerhorn.

Thanks for the help, and please be gentle. I'm a n00b.

Hi.

You can always use muriatic acid only you have to be very careful to prevent acid to get into contact with the silicon otherwise the acid could corrode it.

Just apply an small amout of acid on the stains and see how it works, try it out little by litte and with care, after it you wahs the tank with soap and a sponge very well, rinse a couple of times and leave it resting in one stand full of water to see in there's no leaking for a week and that's it.

Cheers.

If it doesn't rinse clean with just water, grab a few razor blades and scrape it off, no reason to bring chemicals into the mix.
