I bought two new tanks one yesterday and one maybe two months ago and I want to clean up both stands to resell , also learn and have experience in working with wood. Im making this thread to ask MFKers for help with ideas, suggestions, how to's, and just any comments.
I plan to build a stand for my 200 gallon tank just sitting in the basement and I think this will help me get an idea to build a very nice stand for myself.
One tank is a 180 gallon glass with a pretty sturdy stand. Two owners ago this stand was sprayed on some type of rubber material I think its the same material used on the outside of newer homes its a gray color. Then the guy I bought it from painted it white over whatever that material was.
Second tank is a long hexagon 55 gallon acrylic tank. The stand for this tank is horrible, very old, Flimsy, just falling apart, and pretty ugly.
What I want to do for both tanks is to modify the stands that came with it, make it stronger, better looking, and build a canopy for both..
So far what I have done::
::55 Stand::
I stripped this stand down to its frame panels and doors off!!(I wish I took before pictures of this stand) sanded the paint off, took all the nails and staples inside out.
::180 Stand::
Sanded paint off all big areas
This took me all day today doing this myself and the stuff on the 180 took forever to get off.
What I need to do next::
::55 Stand::
Re-sand it with finer sand paper then I have to add some more support to the frame.
::180 Stand::
Take apart doors to finish sanding paint off of all small areas then after than fine sand everything
My ideas/Plans::
::55 Stand::
For the panels all around the stand I need to replace it. My brother was telling me he think it might look good if I throw acrylic all around it and tint it so it would be black. I was only thinking about throwing acrylic to where the doors are at what do you guys think.
I m leaning towards painting the stand black. I want a type of paint that will still show the wood patterns not cover it then gloss it up or something I do not know the terms of finishing the wood.
Build a matching canopy
::180 Stand::
Come up with a nice color or finish to go over the stand after I sand the whole tank down
replace all door hinges
Build matching canopy
Also Im new to woodwork!
Please let me know if I could do something better and I will appreciate the help.. Thanks!!
