does anyone have pics or own one of these guys as an adult? Is there any difference between the regular and the gold back? Or is it just a color morph? I already have the regular one and was wondering if they are that much different than the gold back. Any info would help. Thanx.

No idea - what's the collection location?

I have no idea. I know fish junky in the vendors section is selling them but they are juvies. There were others selling them in the past as well here.

It a Conkel brand. I picked them up through our club's group auction back in 2009 - the pic below is a few days before I let them go, maybe close to 5 inches. Nice looking, just not my taste. A gold base coloring, not sure of the "gold back" reference, but they were not full grown either.

Yea, I never understood where the name 'goldback' comes from but then again, I don't really understand many of the common names used in the hobby (conkel's pseudonyms can be amongst the most puzzling). The fish is from Rio Nanchital and this variant is said to have better color. I keep this variant and can attest to their beauty.
For what its worth, I have been waiting for the opportunity to get more and have passed on lots of regani that were a different variant than my own. I won't mix them.

Hi,

Vieja regani 'gold back' is a knick name given to the Rio Nanchital population, this refering to the gold coloured back and knape they display when adult. They are almost identical to the Rio Jaltepec population that is sometimes available.

I believe they were also given a trade name as rainbow regani and misquoted on this forum by a hobbyist as a new species??

Regards,

Lee.

To really appreciate regani, you have to grow them to adult size, at least 10". There colours will pop, especially the red patterning on the unpaired fins. Young, semi adult fish will look quite bland.

Here's a couple of photos of my Rio Jaltepec pair to illustrate.
