Hi, I hope this is the right place to ask this?

I purchased my Rio 400 second hand and the lighting unit doesn't work, I have tried new bulbs/fuses etc. and still no luck and as it is a sealed unit there is no way to look at the inside without destroying the thing. I have a lighting unit from my old tank set up on a plank of wood across the top of the tank but I want something more permanent. I ordered the Juwel lights from my LFS about 3 weeks ago but they still haven't arrived and I'm considering knocking up my own lid out of wood and saving myself £100.

It will just be a basic flat lid with a hinged flap and light unit attached to the underside, I want it black but can I paint the underside black with normal gloss paint? The temporary lid I have in place stays dry because of the condensation trays I made so there will be little to none condensation dripping back into the tank. If not gloss what else can I use or will bare wood be OK?

Thanks in advance,

Phil

Paint should be okay, as long as the water isn't allowed to drip back into the water. My hood has an open back and a vent at each side to minimise condensation so maybe you could do that to help.

I used krylon spray paint to paint all my pvc spray bars and filter tubes inside my tanks. Its been around 3-4 years and all is fine.

so I see no reason to worry.

Krylon Fusion is great for painting PVC, but I don't think it would work very well on wood.

never used the fusion before but I see the commercials and it looks good.

I would take several coats with spray paint to get wood really good. I would use a brush on for wood myself.

Thanks for the replies!

I have to be careful about gaps for venting because the tank is situated under an open staircase and despite my best efforts to keep them clean the amount of dust and hair that comes off them is shocking! Maybe I can cut holes in the wood and add some vent covers with some foam in between them or something.
