Regular Light Bulbs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Are you talking an incandescent bulb, or a regular flourescent twist bulb? Incandescents don't work well at all. A flourescent twist bulb will work great, one catch though... You have to find one that is in the proper spectrum, and a good kelvin rating.

Howdy,

I had an Echinodorus and Cryptocorynes in a starter 10 gal with just an incandescent bulb, and they survived very well. One could even say the Crypts liked it. The sword grew, but only enough to maintain total biomass. But there are only very few plants (like the ones I mentioned) who can be kept with incandescent bulbs for extended periods of time.

if you are going to go with flourescent bulbs i recomend agro sun bulbs awsome for indoor plants and all my aquatic plants thrived under them.... now i use t-5 bulbs more lumens per watts and more efective.

Well i say this cuz im running 80watts on my 29 gallon. I know its problly not enough but im probbly going to turn it into a planted tank after christmass. Cuz I still need to get a new sub, filters, and ferts to get ready for the plants

From what i can remember from growing certain plants indoors, incandescent bulbs aren't very good for plants. The emit more rays towards the red end of the spectrum. Non-flowering plants need more light from the blue end of the spectrum which is why metal hailide lights are so good because they produce a lot of 'blue' rays. Plants that flower need more light towards the red spectrum, which is why HPS or high pressured sodium lights are used when growing buds indoors.

If you are using flourcent lights of compact flourecent this is a cheaper solutions to providing your plants the correcct spectrum of light. But its less affective at longer ranges.

again this is something i read about awhile ago and i'm pretty sure its correct.
