hey in a two story house would our floor need to be reinforced if we got a 55 gallon aquarium upstais

unless the house is built crappy or is in poor condition you should be fine

55 gallons of water would weight 440 pounds + stand + anything else
so just get a couple of bigger guys to stand up there and jump around for awhile :)

But i think youll be alright, we have our 55 upstairs and like rally said, as long as your house isnt build crappy like youll be fine.

There wont be a problem with it at all. You dont even have to have it running perpendicular to the joists, but if you know which way they run and the room space allows it, then by all means. You really wont gain anything by placing a 1" piece of plywood underneath it either, cause the plywood would sag with the floor.

Can you see through your floors to th e next level :D

Even with lots of gravel, rocks, etc, a 55g standard has about 580 sq. inch foot print, less than 1 lb. per sq. inch. I am 6'1" tall and weigh about 185lbs, size 11 shoes, that translates to about 2+ lbs per square inch with both feet ont the ground, double if I stand on one foot. If worried about rotten flooring place thew tank stand on a plywood platform, just a 18" x 60" sheet of 1/2" ply. otherwise don't sweat it.

You'll be fine, you could fit 3 55 gallons up there i recon! Never heard of any such problems with such small tanks.
Is the house structurally sound? If your furniture from the upper level has not found its way to your ground level on its own, then it is all sound and fine.
