I got a new retic today. One of the lfs' in town got her in on tuesday. They tried to sell her to me then, but I didn't want to pay $100 for a retic when I can get 2 for that price. I went back today, and they (unsolicited) told me they'd do $69. So I fidgeted and squirmed for about 20 minutes and then I bought her. I just wanted to try another retic so bad after what happened with the last two.

Well, her new home is almost ready. Its a 125g tank that I got for free from my brother and resealed. it's got a 30g sump on it, which I will be "instant" cycling with some scrubbies from my other sump. Unfortunately I didn't find out that the tank wasn't sitting level until I had filled it, and the overflows sound like hurricanes the way it is now, so I had to empty it. I'll be leveling the stand tomorrow (any specific suggestions?), and then refilling it. While it was running, there weren't any leaks in the plumbing, tank, or sump. :headbang2
I've included a picture of the setup she'll be going into. (I removed the skinny branch laying across the bottom.) She'll be sharing the tank (for now) with a pair of small (3-4.5in) pbass and a 4in IT datnoid. I plan on getting another retic in the future, most likely a male, but I will be waiting until I have this ray eating well and stable before I do.

She's a little skinny, but I think she has a nice pattern for a retic, and she's very active. I did have to pick a couple of parasites off her disk, but they were easy to remove and she didn't mind being handled one bit. Oh yah, she's currently in my other 125g tank, but I don't want her to stay there long term. Too many other fish competing for food.

She'll only be staying in the 125g for a year or so. I'm planning on buying or building a larger ray tank by the end of the year. I'm think something at least 6x3, but I hope to be able to do something along the lines of 7x4-8x4.

What do you think?

She looks great...doesnt look skinny to me...just looks like a baby..She'll grow in no time..nice set ups too

She's a little skinny, but yes she is young as well. She's still very active and has a voracious appetite, which is good. I can't wait to get her into the other tank so that there is less competition for food for her. My dad helped me get the tank leveled yesterday, so I will be filling it tonight. After it has run for a couple of days, and the temp has stabilized, I will probably transfer some of the biomedia from my other 125g sump into the new sump, and start transferring the bass, dat, and ray over.

When I saw the pictures, I had a sharp intake of breath; when you said that she had a voracious appetite, it became a sigh of relief. Just know that the skinny zone is not a good zone to be in, especially with such a new retic. Fatten her up good for us! Almost every single ray horror story I've heard started with a comment about the thinness of the ray. I know Ashley loves retics, and they are my favorite ray. I can tell by the love that went into the setup that you are going to take excellent care of her. :headbang2

Best of luck, and keep the updates flowin'!

I'm glad you stuck with rays after all the set backs you've suffered. Good luck with her and I hope everything works out with the new setups as well.

awesome setup and ray
full shot of the planted tank ?

Thanks everyone! I'm so glad to have another ray. I was so heartbroken when the other two died... especially since the female had been doing so well, and had gotten a really nice fat booty on her;)

This little girl is eating well. She's nice and aggressive going after live blackworms, and isn't phased at all by the peacock bass, datnoid, black ghost knife, or giant (16") dragon goby trying to push her around and steal them from her. I'll breath easier once she doesn't have so much competition for food though.

I've gotten the other 125g tank up and running. The plumbing is a little noisier than I would like, and there is an occasional slurping noise that is really annoying, but its running without leaking, so I'm happy. I am going to let it run for a few days to make sure everything runs well, then I will transfer scrubbies from my other 125g sump to this tanks sump, and start transferring fish! :headbang2:headbang2

I'm going to go with barebottom for now, and not worry about substrate. I may try out some 3M colorquartz in the future though. I just like the look of the S and T grades a lot.

I'm trying to upload a pair of videos I took after I fed some blackworms. It shows most of the main inhabitants of the tank, and the second one shows most of the tank. I'll try to look up a full tank shot picture as well. I'll post those later.

Nice tank....
