arowana remind me of tarpon for some reason. does anyone know if they are related?

Tarpon and eels (Elopomorpha) are a sister group to arowanas, bonytongues, knives (Osteoglossimorpha). Considered the two most primitive groups of true bony fish.

I did wonder actually! Good question and thanks for the answear!

Apart from sharks and their relatives, eels and tarpon are the only "primitive" saltwater fish I can think of...oh wait, coelacanth too of course.

wow thats awesome! I have been an avid fisherman all my life, and have landed 1 of many hooked tarpon. They are one of my favorite gamefish. Since becoming interested in arowanas I noticed that they (particularly jardini) resembled tarpon in appearence and behavior. Thanks for the answer, now I want one even more!

Here's the real interesting part, you can keep the Pacific Tarpon (Megalops cyprinoides) in freshwater...Plus they don't get as big (but still need a huge tank). I've had three myself, one actually died upon being moved to saltwater (the small one) and the other two (about 24") we acclimated into the shark tank at work...

Oh also, tarpon can breathe air in a similar fashion to arowanas...
