i also use the straight probe type.. they make a waterproof kind but no one ever has them...
these work fine after a few days in the sun if you happen to drop them in a tank..

how does that work? where do u set it up at? im a little confused with the picture.

how does that work?
simple answer - you push the "on/off" button and put the metal probe in water
fancy answer - can be found here

where do u set it up at?
-all of my tanks have either egg crate, screen or plexi tops.. so i just stick the probe through a hole and wait and watch... it takes about 20 seconds to give a reading..

im a little confused with the picture.
-its my hand holding the thermometer.. i work with my hands and so my hands are pretty rough.. the "dirt" is mostly grease and such that is in the cracks in my hands.. it never washes off.. (stay in school kids)

as for where to get them.. sometimes homedepot/lowes has them in with the fancy electrical tools (aka the stuff in the cage).. they can also be found online at amazon.com/ebay.com/google it..

haaaha thanks for the very descriptive answer. but i was just confused on how to set it up really. but i see.. i guess that wont work for me. i have glass tops and no where to set the thermo on top of the tank.

:ROFL::ROFL: that was great ...

so your looking for something that has a probe that stays in the tank at all times .. and you can just walk up .. hit a button and have a reading ..

at work we use fluke meters with temp probes .. you can get one for like $100 and the probes are cheep .. just walk up with the meter and plug in the probe and take a reading .. not as easy as just looking at something .. but it would be the most accurate i think.

for about $50 you can buy a ranco temp controller. not only very accurate, but also a failsafe from cooking your fish and can contoll the heaters from outside the tank.

have you ever calibrated it? i'm not sure if the digital therms for tanks are the same as for culinary, but fill a glass with ice and water. then stick the end of the thermometer in and see what it reads. it should read 32 degrees. not sure if theres a setting to calibrate the therm on there, but if there is, this is how it would be done.
