  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Approximate Size: 7” - 8"

I'm no sturgeon experts but aren't Sterlets grow bigger than that? If it is, then I don't think this website is too reliable? :grinno:

its just saying the size of when u buy it.. not the max size
and btw to op its a good price

it says max size 36" .... not 100% sure, but i think its more like 48-56"

the price is about average, and shipping will probably cost you a decent amount. This time of year though, there aren't many places you'll be able to find them

if possible, I'd try and keep the tank cooler than that. Room temp seems to work well for mine, which is around 68-70. The pet stores keep them in with tropicals, so I guess it can be done, but it may affect them long-term.

if you keep it that warm, make sure you have a lot of surface agitation, so u get as much O2 in the water as possible. (bubblers / powerheads)

That's what I was thinking, in terms of price and availability. They're the only place I've found that even has them right now.

I could lower the temp in the tank a little, maybe down to 75 or so. And the tank has a wet/dry sump, so there is more than enough oxygenation in the system. Plus the returns agitate the surface pretty well. I'm still thinking about it, but I might have to buy a new filter, or replace parts on one, so that would eat up the money I was setting aside for a sterlet. sigh...

I've done business with them. Really nice folks and very helpful. I highly recommend them.

Yes, sterlets will get bigger, max 36 inches for the species. However, depending on the strain, they grow slowly to their maximum size. Keep in mind that not all sterlets grow to the scientifically stated maximum size for the species.

I have some osetra sturgeons that have remained small; three inches while their siblings are over 13 inches. I will inbreed these to see if the small size is heritable.

Sterlets are the slowest growing sturgeon you can get and the smallest at max size.

Your looking at 10 years to get to a max of about a meter in length, in the really big ponds that is. 60-75 cms is more realistic.

Some very good points, not many here seem to understand a fish can live with out attaining it's absolute maximum size. I'd like to hear more about the osetra sturgeons, Latin name?

I'd prefer to keep Shovelnose sturgeons http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/SpeciesSummary.php?id=2596

They are better in warmer water commonly grow to around 2' and are easier to keep in aquarium conditions. Of course they are much harder to find as well.
