The 2nd aquarium I ever had was a 20H at the age of 10. I bought it myself with money made from mowing lawns. When it came time to stock the tank I ended up with 2 neons, 2 lyretail swords and 2 oscars. They were purchased at Sears (yes, Sears used to carry tropical fish). Of course the sales person did not know anything about anything so it took all of about an hour for the neons to disapear. Needless to say, I hated the oscars for eating my favorite fish.
Over the next several months the oscars grew on me. They were extremely fun to feed and I'd often catch grasshoppers in the field and would feed them to the oscars. I trained them to jump out of the tank to eat them from my fingers. Great fun! Eventually they outgrew the tank and I gave them to a cousin that had a 55 gallon tank. After 30+ years of keeping fish, those were the only oscars I have ever owned but I have always had a soft spot in my heart for them.
Yesterday I popped into Petsmart to grab some feeders for the Cichla. As I waited for the clerk to count out 150 goldfish I meandered looking at fish. For whatever reason, one little oscar caught my attention. When standing in front of the tank they all swim eagerly to the glass looking for food. This one fish however seemed to watch me even after I walked away from the oscar tank. Needless to say, he came home with me. I bought a frickin' albino tiger oscar...
What the hell was I thinking??
I'm hoping that with some power feeding he'll be able to live with the kelberi here in a few months. I think it'll make a great addition to the tank.
